I had once heard one of my professors say that it’s not him or the institution that makes the student’s time worthwhile but it’s the classmates that makes the journey so special. The words are so true

Great tour in a tough environment. It takes a degree of bravery to even attempt to run a photo tour at an event the size of Kumbh Mela and when faced with incomplete information and ever changing logistical difficulties. Jassi and his team adapted

Jassi Oberai

Jassi’s interest in photography goes back as long as he can remember. He shares his love of photography with a love of travels. His camera has taken him through length and breadth of India and across the globe. Along the way he has gained a deep insight to intricacies of this sophisticated art form. Jassi is never happier than when he is wandering with his camera either on his own or while leading a group of photo enthusiasts, trying to capture a spectacle in the magical light. After having worked relentlessly for years together in association with several like organizations Jassi has ventured on his own.“As a photographer I do not restrict myself to any particular genre of photography. I like to shoot mostly anything. I like the challenge of going from shooting landscape one day to close up the next and dabbling in portraiture the day after. I love nature, and great use of

Overview of the Photo Tour

Get a glimpse of what’s in store

Mark Twain visited Kumbh Mela of 1895 and wrote “It is wonderful, the power of a faith like that, that can make multitudes upon multitudes of the old and weak and the young and frail enter without hesitation or complaint upon such incredible journeys and endure the resultant miseries without repining. It is done in love, or it is done in fear; I do not know which it is. No matter what the impulse is, the act born of it is beyond imagination, marvelous to our kind of people”

It is been more than a hundred years since the above lines were written and yet they are as true today as they have ever been.

Maha Kumbh Mela is held only once in 12 years in Prayagraj (earlier Allahabad) and we have timed our tour to be there during the main bathing dates.

Day 02-04: Exploring Kumbh Mela

The main highlight for most pilgrims during a Maha Kumbh Mela is the observance of a sacred bath at the Sangam. It is said that a bath in either of the sacred rivers has purifying effects, but where the three rivers meet, the bather’s purification is increased one hundred times. Furthermore, it is said that when one takes a bath at the Sangam during the Kumbh Mela, the influence is one thousand times increased.

Another of the important task for a pilgrim is to associate himself with holymen by listening to their sermons and to watch their processions.  To watch the Kumbh Mela processions is to witness the march of the ages. As the holy saints pass by on their various and sundry conveyances — horses, palanquins, chariots, cars, and camels — they are continually transmitting waves of powerful shakti (energy) to all the people who witness this awe-inspiring and most auspicious event. Devotees are overwhelmed by the palpable spiritual vibrations that pervade the entire atmosphere.

We will spend these days witnessing this amazing centuries old gathering.

During the main bathing days, it will be a grand spectacle to photograph this humanity as well as to photograph the holymen as they walk to take the royal bath here.
